In Indian central and state government recruitment exams, age eligibility is strictly calculated as of a Crucial Date specified in the official advertisement notice, rather than the date of applying online.

How is the crucial cutoff date for age limit determined in central government jobs?

As per Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT) Office Memorandum guidelines, for examinations held in the first half of the year, the crucial date for age reckoning is usually 1st January of that exam year. For examinations held in the second half of the year, the crucial date is 1st August of that year, unless explicitly modified in the official gazette circular.

Does the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) category get age relaxation?

No. In central government recruitments (UPSC, SSC, Railways, Banking), EWS candidates enjoy 10% vacancy reservation but do not receive any upper age relaxation. EWS candidates must fulfill the same age limit criteria as General (UR) category candidates, unless an individual state government provides state-level relaxation.

How is age relaxation calculated for Ex-Servicemen (ESM)?

For Ex-Servicemen who have served in the Army, Navy, or Air Force, age relaxation is calculated by deducting the period of actual military service rendered from their actual age. If the resulting age does not exceed the prescribed maximum age limit by more than 3 years, they are deemed eligible.

What if my birthday falls exactly on the cutoff date?

If your birthday falls on the cutoff date, you are considered to have completed that year of age on that exact day. For example, if the maximum age limit is 30 years as on 01 August 2026 and your date of birth is 01 August 1996, you are exactly 30 years 0 months 0 days old, which is usually eligible. However, if born on 31 July 1996, you would be 30 years and 1 day old (overage).

Can I change my Date of Birth if it is wrong in my Aadhaar or application form?

For all Indian government recruitments, the Date of Birth recorded in your 10th (Matriculation / Secondary School Examination) Certificate or marksheet is treated as final and binding. Aadhaar or birth certificate discrepancies must be aligned with your 10th class certificate prior to document verification.
